Quiet Chapters Book Club

A social reading space, without the pressure of a traditional book club.

Quiet Chapters is FamilyKind's community book club in Ainsdale, created to bring people together through a shared love of reading.

There is no set book, no required reading and no pressure to keep up. People simply bring whatever they are currently reading, spend some time reading alongside others and have the opportunity to chat, connect and build friendships.

Because sometimes being part of a community doesn't have to mean being the loudest person in the room.

Project overview

Quiet Chapters began with a simple idea: could books create an easier way for people to connect?

Traditional social spaces do not work for everyone. Walking into a room of strangers and being expected to make conversation can feel daunting, particularly for people experiencing loneliness or social isolation.

Reading offers something different. It gives people a shared interest, but also takes away some of the pressure to constantly socialise.

Quiet Chapters combines independent reading with relaxed conversation, creating a welcoming space where people can participate in whatever way feels comfortable to them.

The regular club meets fortnightly at the MeCycle Bike Café in Ainsdale, part of Autism Initiatives, with space to read, chat or simply enjoy being around other people.

Why we created it

Quiet Chapters began from a very personal place.

After leaving education, FamilyKind Project Lead Heather found herself experiencing social isolation and missing the everyday connections that had previously come naturally through work. Finding a new community was not as simple as just joining a group. Walking into a room of strangers, making conversation and trying to find where you fit can feel incredibly daunting when you are already feeling isolated.

As someone who loves reading, Heather began thinking about what would make that first step into a new community feel easier. Books offered a natural starting point. They gave people something in common, something to talk about and, importantly, something to do when they did not feel ready to talk at all.

That experience became the idea behind Quiet Chapters: a social reading space where connection can happen naturally, without the expectations of a traditional book club or the pressure to constantly socialise.

What started as one person's search for community has grown into a space where others can find theirs.

What the community has told us

Quiet Chapters was developed in response to what people told us they wanted: more opportunities to meet others, build connections and feel part of their community.

26 people told us they wanted opportunities to meet other people.

20 identified community and connection as important to them.

What began as an idea for a different kind of book club has developed into a growing community. Regular sessions now welcome around 16-18 attendees, while the wider Quiet Chapters WhatsApp community has grown to more than 60 people.

More than a Book Club

Quiet Chapters may have started with books, but it has become about something much bigger: connection, belonging and community.

Members describe it as a place where they can take time for themselves, build friendships without pressure and connect with people they might never otherwise have met.

“Book club gives me time to breathe and be me. Not Mum or wife, just me.”

“It makes me feel part of a community for something I tend to enjoy alone.”

“It’s nice to have a low pressure space to build friendships and connections.”

For some members, that sense of belonging has had a profound personal impact. One member described Quiet Chapters as “an absolute life saver”, explaining that the fortnightly group has become something they look forward to and has had a positive impact on their mental health.

The value of the community is also being recognised beyond the group itself. When plans for the future of Ainsdale Library were shared locally, Quiet Chapters expressed an interest in helping develop the building as a community space. The response from local residents showed just how strongly the project has already become associated with connection in Ainsdale, with one resident describing Quiet Chapters and FamilyKind as “100% the right team” to help bring a community hub to life.

Growing Beyond Our Fortnightly Sessions

Quiet Chapters continues to create opportunities for connection beyond the regular book club.

Picnic & Prose takes social reading outdoors, giving people another relaxed way to read, chat and spend time together. Stitches and Stories brings together a variety of hobbies and ways to support wellbeing for everyone involved.

Our author events bring readers together through shared experiences, including our event with Kate Gray, author of Welcome to the Family, which included an audience Q&A.

Our WhatsApp community keeps those relationships going between sessions, providing somewhere to share books, recommendations and conversation.

Quiet Chapters is proof that something as simple as sitting down with a book can become a starting point for something much more meaningful.

The books bring people together. The community is what keeps them coming back.

How this links to our wider mission

Quiet Chapters may look very different from some of our other projects, but it begins in exactly the same place: listening to what people need.

FamilyKind develops practical, accessible responses to the challenges people experience in their everyday lives.

Through Quiet Chapters, that means addressing social isolation not by telling people to be more social, but by creating a space where connection can happen naturally.

It reflects our commitment to connection, belonging, inclusion and community, and to creating spaces where people can simply come as they are.

Who We Work With

Who we work with matters.

At FamilyKind, we are careful about the organisations we choose to work alongside. We look for people and organisations with a strong track record of supporting families, reducing social isolation, strengthening communities or improving experiences for children and families with SEND.

We want every collaboration to reflect the same values that shape our own work: trust, inclusion, understanding and a genuine commitment to making a difference.
